Carbon Neutral Roadmap: e-bike grant scheme

12 January 2023

From today, 12 January, Islanders can apply for a grant towards the purchase of an e-bike (electricpowered bike), as part of a new scheme run by the Government of Jersey.

A £300,000 pot has been allocated under the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, which was agreed by the States Assembly in 2022 and sets out the policies required to put the Island on the path to net zero emissions by 2050.

The first application window is open for a week, with just over 100 applicants to be chosen at random soon after to receive a voucher for redeeming at one of the local participating shops. The vouchers will be for £300 (e-bike), £600 (e-cargo bike) or £600 (adapted e-cycle). Subsequent application windows will be scheduled every three months over the next two years.

Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “The transport sector is the largest source of on-Island emissions in Jersey, and we need to accelerate the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles towards the adoption of more environmentally friendly ways of getting around.

“This e-bike grant scheme is particularly aimed at supporting those Islanders who have been considering buying a bike but who have perhaps found cost is a barrier. We’ve staggered the application windows over a two-year period to ensure the demand on local retailers is manageable.”

Applicants will be able to select whether they want to go into the e-bike, e-cargo bike, or adapted e-cycle draws.

Deputy Jeune added: “The terrain of the Island is a barrier to some for a traditional pedal cycle, the use of an e-bike removes this barrier whilst maintaining the health benefits of active travel. We’re also committed, through our sustainable transport work and the development of our road safety strategy, to continually improving cycling infrastructure and making provisions to make cycling easier for Islanders.

“2023 will be the year in which we really start to ramp up the actions agreed in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, and we need to make quick inroads into our overall emissions to keep us on a path to net zero. The aim is to shift two thirds of the Island’s fleet away from fossil fuels by 2030, and that will be achieved through a combination of increasing active travel and public transport as well as an increase in electric vehicle use, including e-bikes.

“I’d encourage Islanders to submit their applications this week and wish them good luck in the random draw. I’d also like to thank local cycle groups and bike shops for their support, input and expertise in preparing this scheme over the past few months.”
