Get Tested This World Hepatitis Day

Jersey's Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) service is urging Islanders to get tested for Hepatitis this World Hepatitis Day (Friday 28 July).

There are currently over 350 million people living with viral hepatitis and more than one million lives are lost each year to Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C.

All types of viral hepatitis can affect anyone and can cause serious health conditions, such as inflammation of the liver. This can lead to other problems, which could be fatal. Viral hepatitis can be prevented or controlled if diagnosed early.

Consultant and Lead in Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses, Dr Rajesh Hembrom, said: "It is important that Islanders are tested for Hepatitis as some people may not even know they have it. There is a lot of stigma around on Hepatitis, however, it is not something to be embarrassed about as it can affect anyone, irrespective of age, gender, and race.

"If found early, serious health problems can be prevented. I fully encourage everyone and anyone to book a test as it could save your life."

Islanders can book their free Hepatitis test at the Hospital by calling 444319 or emailing BBV@health.gov.je. 

If anyone is concerned about Hepatitis or would like advice and support, they should contact their GP or the BBV service.
