First 100 homes supported by low-carbon heating scheme

25 September 2023

More than £415,000 of funding has already been awarded to support Islanders to switch their heating systems away from fossil fuels, under the Government of Jersey’s low-carbon heating incentive.

Launched four months ago, the scheme gives any homeowner with a fossil fuel system access to up to £5,000 match funding. Low-income homeowners, meeting the scheme criteria, can access £10,000 worth of support without the need to match fund.

Figures to the end of August showed £415,000 of applications from 102 homes have been approved, of which £128,450 has already been used.

The heating sector is the second highest contributor to the Island’s greenhouse gas emissions (behind transport), and therefore is a key focus for the Government’s Carbon Neutral Roadmap, which outlines the policies and actions required to set Jersey on a path to net zero emissions by 2050.

Assistant Minister for the Environment, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “We’ve had really positive feedback from Islanders who have already accessed the scheme and made the switch to lower carbon ways of heating their homes.

“I’m pleased with the way Islanders have embraced the scheme in these first few months, but I’m keen for more households to come forward, particularly at this time of year, to start the process ahead of the colder winter months.”

Technologies included in the scheme are electric flow boilers, electric storage and panel radiators, and air source heat pumps. Energy efficiency funding is also available as part of the scheme.

The Government of Jersey is also seeking new contractors who wish to carry out the installations. Potential contractors should visit www.cqs.je
