Minister For Home Affairs Attends Scrutiny Panel Hearing

27 July 2023

The Minister for Home Affairs, Deputy Helen Miles, along with Assistant Minister Deputy Hilary Jeune and senior colleagues from Justice and Home Affairs attended the Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel Public Hearing yesterday (Wednesday 26 July 2023).

A broad spectrum of topics was discussed. The Minister and Chief Ambulance Officer confirmed that the States of Jersey Ambulance Service requirements are being considered as part of the new hospital designs and are confident that the Patient Transport Service is well prepared for the opening of Enid Quenault Centre at Les Quennevais.

The Chief of Police talked through initiatives to tackle anti-social driving and positive working partnerships regarding mental health incidents.

In addition, a recent Ministerial Decision was signed to approve the next stages of the improvement works for La Moye Prison and set up a temporary pop-up coffee shop, which will be operated by prisoners prior to their release.

Minister for Home Affairs, Deputy Helen Miles, commented: "I am grateful to officers across Justice and Home Affairs and the States of Jersey Police for their tireless work to keep islanders' safe. There's lots of work going on across the Department as we continually strive to strengthen and improve.

"One of my ministerial priorities is to ensure our frontline services are appropriately funded to perform effectively. As part of this, we secured additional funding for the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service and are currently recruiting additional firefighters, both wholetime and on-call. I am really encouraged by the level of interest we have had so far. I would encourage anyone interested to reach out and find out more about this fantastic career.

"I have been incredibly impressed with the work that is ongoing by the Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce who have been working hard over the last year to collect evidence and improve our understanding of the experiences of women and girls in Jersey. I look forward to considering their final report later this year and taking action based on their recommendations.

"Another priority for this Government is improving relations with our nearest neighbours in France, and I am delighted that our pilot scheme allowing French nationals to travel to the Island with their ID cards has so far operated with great success, with ferry operators predicting that over the coming months 50% of all their day trip passengers will enter Jersey using their ID cards."
