St Christopher’s School report published

29 November 2023

St Christopher's School has been inspected under the Jersey Standards for Independent Schools. Whilst not a full Jersey School Review, these inspections serve to check an independent school's compliance against the minimum standards required by the Education (Jersey) Law 1999. A copy of the inspector's report will be available here from 12pm today.

The inspection team included two officers from the Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills, who visited the school over two days in July. It was led by a senior adviser who is also an experienced off-Island inspector.

The inspectors visited lessons across all year groups and spoke to pupils about their work. They reviewed safeguarding records and staff recruitment files. Discussions were held with the senior leadership team, teaching staff, support staff and the caretaker. The lead inspector also met with a small group of parents.

Acting Headteacher of St Christopher's School, Cheryl Ahearn, said: "I'm delighted that this report highlights the positive behaviour of our pupils and the genuine empathy and respect they show for each other. This captures the caring ethos of our school community. I am immensely proud of every staff member and thank them for their continued hard work, dedication, and commitment.

"I'd also like to thank the team for their thorough inspection of the school and their professionalism throughout this process. I am grateful for their recommendations, which will help inform our ongoing growth. As part of that evolution, our brand-new website has now gone live. This will provide a resource for parents and carers to find out more about the school and what we can offer them."

Independent schools are inspected against the requirements of the Education (Jersey) Law 1999 and the minimum standards outlined in the Jersey Standards for Independent School Inspections handbook. These inspections consider the school's compliance against eight standards: the quality of education, pupil behaviour and personal development, pupil safeguarding and welfare, suitability of staff and proprietors, suitability of school premises, provision of information, parental complaints, and the quality of leadership and management.
