St Luke’s School Street starts next week

19 April 2023

St Luke’s Primary School is the first school in Jersey to pilot a ‘School Street’ which will see Elizabeth Street close during drop off and collection times.

From Monday 24 April, the five-week pilot scheme will close the street to through-traffic, Monday to Friday:

  • between 7.30am and 9.30am
  • between 2.30pm and 4.30pm

The School Street aims to make the area around the school safer for pupils and encourage more to walk and cycle. It is in line with Jersey’s pledge to provide safer walking and cycling routes for families to travel to school, as part of the Common Strategic Policy.

For more information about the scheme visit the  School Street Scheme for safer travel to school page.

Assistant Minster for Infrastructure, Deputy Steve Ahier, said: “School Streets creates a safer environment for families to travel to and from school.

“Elizabeth Street by St Luke’s School is the first to test out the scheme, following its successful ‘Play Street’ closure in 2021, and due to the narrow nature of the street.

“During drop-off and pick-up time, the street will become a pedestrian and cycle only zone, with no motor vehicles allowed to drive through, unless they have been granted an exemption. I am looking forward to seeing how the scheme goes over the next five weeks, and we will be gathering feedback from children, parents, teachers, and residents in the area.”

A survey will open next week for Islanders to feedback their thoughts on the scheme.
