Update: Grands Vaux flooding

22 February 2023

Following the flooding in Grands Vaux last month, 18 households remain in temporary or alternative accommodation either in hotels or with family and friends, with several of these families now moving to permanent new homes.

Nine of those households are still being accommodated within hotels and we continue to support those families. The work required to get people back into their homes is extensive and is being undertaken in three key stages.

For the worst affected properties, the works will take up to three months to complete. The first stage requires the properties to be emptied of all damaged furniture and fixtures. This is followed by the drying-out process which can take several weeks. The final stage is to carry out the necessary repairs to make the homes habitable.

This involves the replacement of skirtings, doors and rewiring to the ground floors, and replacing damaged fixtures such as kitchens. Every home will have a full electrical test and new flooring will be laid on the ground floors before residents move back in.

Andium Homes is committed to getting their clients back into their homes as quickly and safely as possible. Infrastructure, Housing and Environment and Jersey Water are working together to assess upstream water management, and downstream capacity, along with a discussion over the role of the reservoir.

We are also looking at Options are also being looked at to provide better flood protection to houses in the area, and how we can improve warnings of flood events. This will include looking at a better warning system, how we measure live data in the catchment area, how water is managed higher up in the catchment and what flood defence measures can be deployed to better protect houses.

More detailed information around the flood management plans will be shared with the residents in the next couple of months before being shared externally.
