Islanders to receive rewards for taking part in World Car Free Day

20 September 2023

Tokens redeemable for a free breakfast muffin will be hidden along walking and cycling paths into Town on Friday morning, rewarding Islanders taking part in World Car Free Day.

Amongst the tokens, three will be redeemable for an £80 Acorn Enterprises voucher which can be used towards the purchase of a repurposed bike.

The tokens should be exchanged at the Climate Jersey trailer in the Royal Square between 07:30 and 10am on Friday 22 September. The treasure-hunt style event morning is being run by the Sustainability and Climate Change Engagement team.

Islanders also taking part in Love to Ride's Cycle September challenge can log their rides on the platform for a chance to win an e-bike and to earn the 'World Car Free Day' badge on their profile.

Active Travel Engagement Officer, Ell Hopton, said: "There are 100 tokens to be found and we hope that by offering a small incentive to ditch the car for a day, Islanders will be encouraged to think about other ways they can travel. There are so many additional benefits to travelling actively for our daily journeys, including improved health and wellbeing, cleaner air, and less congestion on the roads.

"17% of Jersey's carbon emissions come from travel in petrol and diesel cars, and 40% of Islanders travel to work alone in the car. To reach our aim of net zero by 2050, we need many more Islanders to switch to an alternative mode of travel.

"We know that many people in Jersey do not have access to a bike, so this event aims to include those that travel by other means including walking and taking the bus. Three lucky winners will win an £80 voucher to spend at Acorn, which we hope will enable them to purchase a bike for themselves or a family member."
