Upcoming Weather Alert and preparatory measures

Jersey Met has provided an update on the expected severe weather conditions for today, Thursday 4 January 2024.

Rainfall: 

  • Rainfall is expected to be between 10 to 20 mm today, with spells of rainfall through the morning, further rainfall expected early afternoon and showers later this afternoon into this evening, some of which will be heavy. 
  • There is the potential risk of flooding at times in low lying areas.

Wind: 

  • A red wind warning was issued at 8:48am for the Channel Island Shipping Area. 
  • Very strong and gusty winds are expected to affect the Channel Islands this evening. 
  • Winds for the Island, Southerly F5 to 6, increasing F6 to 7 late afternoon and becoming southwest to west F7 to gale F8 early evening, briefly severe gale F9 with gusts to 60mph. 
  • Peak winds are forecast to be between 5pm to 7pm. 

Preparatory Actions: 

  • Your safety is our primary concern. 
  • Teams from Jersey Met, Infrastructure & Environment, States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, States of Jersey Police and Honorary Police, Jersey Water, and Andium are actively monitoring the evolving weather situation with visits to residents in the Grands Vaux area, as well as the erection of flood defences, being undertaken to mitigate the potential impact of flooding. 
  • We urge all residents to take appropriate precautions, stay informed, and follow the advice issued by the Government of Jersey, Jersey Met and Emergency Services.
