Statement on the passing of Peter Hellyer

The Government of Jersey is deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Hellyer on Sunday night. Born and raised in Jersey, Peter was a celebrated historian, geologist, and filmmaker who devoted much of his life to promoting the history and conservation of nature in his adopted home in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he was a well-loved and respected figure.

Peter was a tireless champion of closer links between Jersey and the UAE, from dairy and conservation cooperation to collaboration in trade and financial services. Throughout his long career, Peter helped increase engagement including through political, commercial, and diplomatic visits in both directions. Peter was a regular attendee at events for the Jersey community in the UAE, including by championing the participation of a Government of Jersey delegation to World Expo in Dubai in 2021.

The tributes paid to Peter, from senior political representatives across the Emirates to fellow historians, geologists, and journalists around the globe, speak volumes for his profound impact upon those he met throughout his life.

The Minister for Treasury & Resources and Assistant Minister for External Relations, Deputy Ian Gorst said: “I would like to send my sincere condolences to Peter’s family, who remain in our thoughts at this difficult time. Peter was a true ambassador for the Island and his loss will be felt greatly by all those who knew him across his two homes of Jersey and the UAE.

"I worked with Peter over many years and in different ministerial roles and I can think of no one who has done more to further the relationship between our two jurisdictions. Peter’s passion, knowledge and dedication was irrepressible. From his lifetime of tireless work, Peter leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning many fields and geographies, and I am sure it is a legacy that will stand the test of time.”

The Government of Jersey wishes to extend its condolences to Peter’s family, friends and colleagues.
