Open space study 2008

What is meant by 'open space'?

The Island Plan proposed definition of ‘open space’ is as follows:
'Open space is defined as land used as a park or country park, for open air sport or activity, or land previously used as a cemetery – the definition includes bodies of water within these areas.'

Why do we need to assess open space?

Assessing local needs of:

  • open space
  • sport
  • recreation facilities

is an essential element in providing the evidence needed to support any proposed standards of provision and recommendations. As this study formed part of the Island Plan Review it was appropriate that consultation was limited to consultation with key stakeholders, including:

  • sports clubs
  • schools
  • parishes

Consultation with sports clubs

Simple questionnaires were used, asking about the:

  • quality
  • quantity
  • access to facilities on the Island

These were sent out to sports clubs from the following sports:

  • cricket
  • football
  • rugby
  • hockey

Consultation with parishes

Meetings were held with the Connétables from 11 of the 12 parishes to discuss the study and identify issues around open space.

Consultation with schools

A simple questionnaire was sent to all the schools in the Island, asking questions about the:

  • quality
  • quantity
  • and access of their facilities

Consultation with other key stakeholders

Several meetings were held with officers from the States departments to gather information in relation to the provision of, and demand for, facilities in the Island. These included the following departments:

  • Environment
  • Education, Sport and Culture
  • Housing
  • Transport and Technical Services
