Solar panels (permissions)

​Planning permission

Solar panels and photo-voltaic panels do not require planning permission, providing: 

  • the property is not registered as a listed building or place (LBP) or a potential listed building or place (pLBP)
  • where excavation of the ground is involved the land does not fall within an area of archaeological potential (AAP) 
  • where the installation is to be located on a principal elevation the building is not in a conservation area (CA) (‘principal elevation’ means any elevation that faces or is within 20 metres of a public road. A ‘public road’ is a road or footpath which is maintained at the expense of the public)
  • where photovoltaic panels are to be installed the property does not lie in the area hatched red on the map contained within the Planning and Building (General Development)(Jersey) Order 2011
  • panels erected on the ground do not exceed 2.5 metres above ground level or 2 metres if they are within 1 metre of a boundary
  • the total aggregate external area of ground mounted solar panels or similar devices does not exceed 9 square metres
  • no more than 90% of the area of a roof plane may be taken up by solar panels or similar devices
  • any panel fixed to a sloping roof must not project more than 20cm above the surface of the roof plane and in the case of a flat roof, no more than 1 metre above the roof
  • no previous permit stated that permission is required
