How Trading Standards can help

​What we do

The Jersey Trading Standards Service helps to ensure that local businesses can compete on equal terms. We also ensure that safety and economic interests of consumers are not compromised by unfair or illegal trading practices.

Advice we offer

Consumer Advice Service

We provide free and confidential consumer advice. We can talk through your consumer problem, advise you on your consumer rights and how best to resolve your dispute.

We provide guidance on how businesses can follow trading standards laws. Such as:

  • shop policies which honour consumer statutory rights
  • price marking 
  • distance selling
  • product safety
  • weights and measures 

Retail and hospitality industries (industry and finance section)

Enforcement

We carry out a programme of unannounced inspections to trade premises to check for compliance with trading standards laws. These include:

  • inspection of weighing and measuring equipment
  • price checks
  • shop policies
  • safety of goods
  • advertising
