Theory test
You must pass the driver theory test before you can book or sit a practical driving test.
A provisional licence is valid for six months from the date of issue. The driving test (at least the theory test) must be attempted during the six months validity or the Constable of the Parish will normally refuse to issue another provisional for up to one year.

How to book a practical driving test
The test can be booked in person at Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS).
You will need:
- your Jersey provisional licence
- your theory test pass certificate
- your CBT certificate (if required)
- the correct fee (£58.50 for heavy motor cycle or £50.50 for light motor cycle or moped)
You can also book your driving test online using a credit or debit card.

Cancelling or changing your test
To cancel your test booking and obtain a refund, or change a test booking, you must give three full working days notice (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays). You must also produce your receipt.
Taking lessons before a test
The Jersey School of Motorcycling can provide lessons before your practical test, however you should take your theory test before attending these.
On the day of your test
You must arrive 15 minutes before your test. If you're late, you will lose your booking and you will not get a refund.
The examiner will want to see:
- your Jersey provisional licence
- your theory test pass certificate
- your CBT certificate (if required)
- a valid insurance certificate or cover note for your vehicle (a schedule, a policy, an insurance disc or photocopies are not acceptable as proof of insurance cover)
- (if the bike does not belong to you) a letter of permission, signed by the owner, to use the bike for the purpose of the test
What you'll be tested on
All categories
Before the test you will be fitted with a radio receiver and speaker. The examiner will follow you in a car and give you directional instructions. The examiner will be looking for you to demonstrate that you can:
- ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road users
- use rear observation when appropriate
- assume the correct road position when riding and at junctions
- generally ride safely and competently in a variety of road and traffic conditions
Off-road test for category (A) heavy motorcycle
The examiner will observe you performing a variety of manoeuvres in an area away from the public highway.
You will be asked to do the following:
- three figures-of-eight around cones
- slalom around cones
- U-turn in an enclosed area
- controlled stop in a specific area
- emergency stop
- ride alongside the examiner who will walk, varying his / her pace

Vehicles you can take your test on
Your vehicle must meet the requirements of one of the following categories:

iii. a power to weight ratio of 100kw / tonne |
| (A) Heavy motorcycle | i. an engine capacity of at least 240cc
ii. an unladen weight which does not exceed 407kg |
Your vehicle must also:
- be in a road worthy condition
- have an 'L' learner plate as part of the rear number plate
- have fully operational direction indicators
- have a brake light that operates with the front brake and the rear brake
- have an operational horn
Taking an audio or visual recording of your test
Audio or visual recording of a driving test is not permitted, irrespective of the position of the recording equipment and which aspect of the test is being recorded. If it becomes apparent that audio or visual recording equipmentt is active either in a test vehicle or externally, the examiner will politely ask those responsible to switch off the equipment. If the candidate cannot do this quickly or easily, the test will be ended and the candidate will lose their test fee.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
You can take your test using a vehicle with automatic transmission. If you pass your test using a vehicle with automatic transmission your full licence will only entitle you to drive vehicles with automatic transmission. You will have to take a further test using a vehicle with manual transmission to entitle you to drive manual transmission vehicles.
