Motor cycles and mopeds inspections (PTI)

When you need a PTI

Every motorcycle 125cc and below and moped registered in Jersey needs to be inspected every 2 years after it's 3 years old.

The inspection can be completed up to 2 months before its due date. The date the inspection is due is based on the vehicle's First Date of Use. This can be found on the registration document and will be the earliest date of registration.

Find out a vehicle's inspection (PTI) status

We'll notify the registered owner 2 months before the inspection is due. However, it's the registered owners responsibility to make sure that it's inspected in time.

When an inspection is not required

An inspection is not required if your vehicle is not being used on the road, for example it's being stored or restored. As soon as you intend to use you moped or motorcycle on the road, an inspection will be required.

You don't require an inspection if your moped or motorcycle is over 40 years old.

Booking an inspection

To make a booking call DVS on +44 (0) 1534 448600 or come in person to our offices.

The inspection costs £32 and must be paid at the time of booking.

If the inspection passes

If your motorcycle or moped passes the inspection, a Certificate of Satisfaction will be given to the person presenting the vehicle for inspection. The record of passing will also be held at DVS against the vehicle's registration record.

You will not need to display anything in your vehicle. However, the police may ask you to provide the Certificate of Satisfaction within a set time period if you're not able to show it at the time of asking.

If you're taking your motorcycle or moped outside Jersey, check the paperwork you're legally required to have in the country you're travelling in.

If the inspection fails

The person at the inspection will be given a failure notice showing the level of failure, and verbal explanation of why your vehicle has not passed.

If you're allowed to drive the vehicle away it may only be for a single journey or where you can get the necessary repairs done.

If you have repairs done and the vehicle passes the inspection within 30 days you'll only need to pay  £16. You'll need to pay the full inspection fee again after the 30 days.

About the inspection and what it covers

The inspection will be carried out at the DVS facility at La Collette and takes around 15 minutes.

You need to bring the vehicle for inspection in a clean and roadworthy condition. We recommend that you have your vehicle serviced by a qualified mechanic before.

When you arrive at DVS you should report to reception. A DVS inspector will check your moped or motorcycle against the standards below and will advise you of the outcome.

What we'll inspect

Your motorcycle or moped will be inspected against the DVS inspection check sheet for motorcycles and mopeds.

Find the detailed technical standards in the DVS Inspection Manual: Mopeds and Motorcycles.
