Digital

Continuum

Continuum are looking for current and prospective university students from Jersey passionate about using data to improve Jersey people's work and Island lives. By becoming their bursary student you’ll:

• join their teams of experts to learn what they do
• use data to automate repetitive tasks

They offer £750 per term towards university fees and expenses, plus a minimum of 4 weeks’ paid work experience during holidays. They do not mind what you’re studying, but like them you have to:

• be highly numerate
• enjoy people
• love data, storytelling and changing lives for the better

• understand the role of data in the future of all areas of life

Corefocus

Since 2008, Corefocus have provided a bursary and work experience support to a local university student studying for a computer science degree or equivalent.

The Corefocus IT undergradute bursary includes:

• an annual cash award of £3,000, paid on a termly basis
• paid holiday work experience at Corefocus of 6 to 10 weeks per year paid well above minimum wage

They undertake that this work will be both related to your future career and worthwhile.

Your future career will need you to match your technical ability with work experience. Their bursary is aimed at helping you achieve that and easing the financial strain of being at university.

JT

JT offer £2,000 per year towards university fees and expenses plus a minimum of 6 weeks paid work experience during holidays in one of their busy departments. Students encouraged to apply typically study:

• science
• technology
• engineering
• maths

Some business degrees are also acceptable.

You must have been resident in the Channel Islands for 5 years before you can apply.

Engineering

IE Bursary Scheme

Infrastructure and Environment (IE) has established a Bursary Award to provide funding to university students studying engineering or natural environment disciplines.

Geomarine AS and A-level Bursary

The bursary provides help for those studying AS and A-Levels interested in a career in the engineering or geotechnical industry:

• single payment of up to £500 to be spent on IT
• £100 for textbooks per year, for 2 years 
• assistance with arranging or facilitating work experience

To apply you need to write a letter to Phil Horsley at Geomarine. The letter should be:

• marked ‘Geomarine AS and A-level bursary’
• state your career interests, GCSEs being taken and intended AS and A-level courses

Interviews take place in September and you’ll need proof of grades achieved and acceptance on AS level courses.

Geomarine Degree Bursary

Applications are welcome from students who have been accepted on a relevant degree course.

The bursary provides:

• single payment of up to £500 to be spent on IT
• £225 for textbooks per year for up to 4 years
• assistance with arranging or facilitating work experience

James Roberts Trust

This trust is only open to St Ouen residents in receipt of a maintenance grant from Student Finance.

Jersey Electricity

Jersey Electricity has a number of bursary and work experience opportunities available for a variety of roles.

Jersey Water

Jersey Water provide financial support to those studying:

• engineering, such as civil, mechanical, electrical
• water resources
  
• management
• conservation
• environmental sciences
• chemistry

Their financial support includes:

• £2,000 per academic year, towards cost of study for the duration of your degree course
• up to 4 weeks paid work experience per year

You must have been resident in Jersey for 5 years before you can apply.

The application process is available on their website each year from January to April.

SunWorks

SunWorks are Jersey's experts in the design, installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic and associated storage technologies. Their overriding purpose is to enable Jersey households and businesses to add to the world's supply of renewable electricity and thereby help to dilute high emission energy sources.

In part because of the concerns surrounding climate change, SunWorks have seen a substantial growth in their business and they expect that to continue.

With an eye to the future they’re offering a £1,500 per year bursary to environmentally aware Jersey students undertaking a course of study to degree level in an area related to their work. They’ll also consider equivalent level vocational qualifications.

This could involve, for example:

• renewable energy
• engineering
• technical design
• construction
• project management

They’ll also offer some paid work experience to the successful candidate.

Environmental

IE Bursary Scheme

Infrastructure and Environment (IE) has established a Bursary Award to provide funding to university students studying engineering or natural environment disciplines.

JICAS dissertation bursary

JICAS offer different bursaries and project placements. Most are now closed for the academic year.

Subjects or careers related to the JICAS dissertation bursary:

• prerequisite and gateway to PhD
• academic positions in leading organisations and enterprises
• environmental and conservation consultancy services
• management positions in global conservation NGOs
• management positions in public conservation government ministries, organisations and departments
• management positions in other third sector conservation organisations and institutions
• technical positions in conservation and sustainability consultancies, and international bodies such as IUCN
• corporate social responsibility

You need to be accepted on to the course via Exeter University.

There are 2 times £2000 off tuition fees and offer a number of project placements on islands across the world.

Hospitality

Seymour Hotels Bursaries

Seymour Hotels are proud to offer local students the chance to turn their dreams of a successful career in hospitality into reality with a Seymour Hotels Bursary for university and college.

The University Bursary

You could be awarded a bursary if you’re headed to university to study a hospitality related undergraduate degree in 2024, including culinary courses.

The bursary includes:

• financial support towards course fees of £3,000
• paid work experience opportunities during your holidays
• appropriate experiences and events during your placements
• the opportunity of full time employment upon graduation

The Student Sponsorship Package

You could be awarded a student sponsorship package if you’re headed to Highlands College to study the hospitality and tourism or culinary arts full time courses in 2023.

The package includes:

• course maintenance costs
• a paid part-time job during your studies
• the opportunity of full time employment upon graduation

Law

Bedell Cristin bursary scheme

The Bedell Cristin bursary scheme provides the opportunity, through a combination of financial assistance and work experience, to assist students in their progress towards successful legal careers in the Channel Islands.

It’s open to local candidates who wish to pursue a legal career in Guernsey or Jersey and are studying for a degree at university.

Recipients will:

• receive an annual allowance which is paid in 3 instalments
• be offered up to 8 weeks paid work experience during holiday periods
• receive a voucher towards study materials, only for all new bursary students

Bedell Cristin encourages the formation of close links and aim to build lasting relationships with bursary students including the provision of guidance and advice from our experienced teams as career choices are being made.

Candidates must be residentially qualified in Guernsey or Jersey and must not in receipt of any other employer funded bursary payments.

Carey Olsen bursary scheme

The Carey Olsen bursary scheme is primarily designed for students either studying law or about to embark on a professional legal qualification. In exceptional circumstances, they’ll also consider undergraduates who are keen to study law at a later stage.

Students should possess excellent personal and academic skills. As well as receiving financial assistance while studying, in the form of a term time grant, you’ll be offered up to 8 weeks of relevant and engaging paid employment throughout the year. These placements take place in all legal teams in the firm to provide a rounded experience of legal practice.

The Bursary award is £2,200 paid in 3 term time instalments, plus £250 book vouchers per year. You will be guaranteed 6 weeks of paid work experience each year.

Collas Crill bursaries

Collas Crill offer a number of bursaries to students from both Guernsey and Jersey. If you’re a Channel Islands resident and thinking of pursuing a career in law, they can assist you financially with your studies as well as providing support and work experience opportunities.

If you wish to apply for a bursary, you are not limited to taking a law degree. They consider the intention to become a lawyer rather than the degree course being followed. Alternatively, they also support postgraduate studies with a law content.

In addition to their academic requirements, they’re looking for students who possess the attributes that embody Collas Crill. Strong communication skills and drive are key qualities that they look for.

The bursary award covers the duration of your relevant studies and will be made up of: 

• a financial contribution, paid in three instalments in the academic year
• vouchers to assist you with buying academic books
• preferential consideration for work placements at Collas Crill
• careers advice from partners and other lawyers
• 4 weeks paid work experience per academic year

Mourant bursary scheme

The Mourant bursary scheme provides a fantastic opportunity for students to gain insight into a wide range of legal practice areas and a variety of clients in an exciting and supportive environment. The scheme is open to Jersey residents who are either currently studying for, or about to start studying law at university, or intend to complete a conversion course in the future.

As well as passion for a career in law, Mourant are looking for candidates who share their strong values and their inclusive vision.

The bursary scheme provides:

• yearly bursary payment towards your academic fees
• minimum four weeks guaranteed paid work experience per year
• online resources with help and general information for you
• personal mentor for the whole period of your bursary; during and outside of placements
• support and expert guidance along with constructive feedback and valuable career advice
• possibility of a career with Mourant when you finish your degree

Ogier bursary scheme

The Ogier bursary scheme is an opportunity for students studying law at university or for students completing a non-law degree, with the intention of doing a conversion to law at a later stage.

Applications for the bursary scheme are invited from students due to sit their A levels in the summer preceding entry onto the scheme, together with students already at university or undertaking GDL, LPC, Bar School or SQE studies. 

The bursary scheme applies for the duration of an individual's relevant studies and provides: 

• ​financial support in quarterly instalments 
• guaranteed work placements each academic year 
• invitations to social events  
• use of Ogier’s library and information services 
• careers advice from partners and other lawyers and professionals 
• book vouchers worth £200 

The bursary scheme enables individuals to build up their experience and career working alongside talented lawyers in a forward-thinking, innovative, dynamic and inclusive environment. 

The application window will open at the beginning of October each year, for entry on to the scheme the following September.

The Maples Group bursary scheme

The Maples Group bursary scheme has been created to ensure that successful students gain an insight into the fast paced legal world and an introduction into life at a truly global law firm. The Jersey bursary scheme is intended to provide financial assistance and an exciting opportunity for qualified residents of Jersey who are considering a career in law. They make every effort to ensure that each student works with all members of the team in the Jersey office. There will be opportunities for students to grow their professional network and make connections with individuals from across the firm in each of their jurisdictions.

Viberts

Viberts offer you a sum of money towards the cost of each term for one year, which may be renewed for a further year. You’ll need to be able to commit to 8 weeks paid work experience and will get the opportunity to work with their lawyers and gain practical experience. You need to be on target for a 2:1 and intend to return to the Island to work in law after completion of your degree.

The Paul Brown Memorial Fund

The Paul Brown Memorial fund supports exceptional young musicians under 35 years of age likely to make a career in music with costs associated with their specialism. The fund does not support the costs of first degree study.

Nautical

Sponsorship of Officer Cadetship Training Programme

Islanders are not eligible for funding from the UK Government to qualify as a Deck Officer of the Watch.

To support local residents who want a maritime career, Ports of Jersey and the maritime charity Trinity House jointly sponsor the 3-year Deck Cadet training programme. This qualification allows local cadets to embark on a career with the:

• Merchant Navy
• offshore oil and gas
  
• superyacht
• marine renewables sectors

A Ports of Jersey sponsored cadet forms strong links with our maritime teams. Cadets are invited to gain sea-time on our Marine Services tug vessels and to gain experience as a Watch Officer in our Coastguard and VTS department.

Criteria to apply for Officer Cadetship Training Programme

All Officer Cadets must pass the Seafarer Medical Examination (ENG1). The maritime industry uses the UCAS tariff points system to check that qualifications meet the entry requirements. 48 UCAS points are needed, made up of any combination of qualifications including:

• BTEC qualifications
• A levels
• International Baccalaureate

Jersey Clipper Bursary

This annual award is given to an Islander to help them undertake some form of maritime endeavour. This could be, for example:

• a trip on a tall ship
• participation in a watersports competition
• competing in an ocean race
• gaining a coaching award

Applications should be no more than 200 words and emailed by the end of April annually.

The bursary is currently £1,000.
