Howard Leopold Davis Scholarship Trust

About the Howard Leopold Davis Scholarship Trust

The Howard Leopold Davis Scholarship Trust supports students who would benefit from the educational opportunities at Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College but are unable to meet the cost of the fees. The core purpose of the Trust is that there should be no economic bar to an education at Jersey College for Girls or Victoria College.

Eligibility criteria

A student may be eligible to receive funding if they:

  • were born, or have a parent who was born, in Jersey
  • attended a local primary school for not less than two years
  • have the academic ability to be awarded a place at either Jersey College for Girls or Victoria College either by success in the entrance examination or, for pupils attending Jersey College Preparatory (JCP) or Victoria College Preparatory (VCP), the certification by the Headteacher that they will meet the academic requirements
  • can provide details of the family income and assets which are assessed and approved by the Trustees
  • have demonstrated during their primary school education that they are hard working and would benefit from the academic offer and enrichment opportunities, including sport, music, culture, volunteering, environmental work and the combined cadet force. This is assessed through a personal reference provided by the headteacher of the student's primary school
  • have the support and commitment of their parents, carers or guardians in completing and signing the application form

How to Apply

Application forms can be obtained from either Victoria College or Jersey College for Girls, either in person or via their websites.

Finding out if your application is successful

The headteachers will consider all applications and shortlist three to four candidates each year. Trustees meet annually, usually in March, and receive presentations of the shortlisted candidates for the following academic year.  Trustees may make full or partial awards based on the published criteria. The decision to award any scholarship is entirely at the discretion of the Trustees and will be communicated by the headteacher.

How the fund originated

The Trust was initially established by the estate of Thomas Benjamin Frederick Davis in 1929 to support boys destined to join the Armed Forces to attend Victoria College. In 1965 support was broadened to include all boys, and then in 1976 to also include support for girls to attend Jersey College for Girls.
