Health and safety in swimming pools

21 May 2018

As the weather improves and the summer season begins, operators of swimming pools are encouraged to review their arrangements for managing health and safety in their pools. As a pool operator you are responsible for the health and safety of employees, pool users and other people on the premises.

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently issued the fourth edition of its guidance document 'Health and Safety in Swimming Pools' HSG179. The document, published this year, updates previous advice and incorporates new developments in relation to equipment and facilities.

The guidance provides useful advice on arrangements for:

  • lifeguarding
  • pool equipment
  • maintenance of pools
  • dealing with the hazardous chemicals involved in pool water treatment

Following the guidance is not compulsory but if you operate a swimming pool and do follow the guidance you will normally be doing enough to comply with the Health and Safety Law in Jersey.

'Health and Safety in Swimming Pools' HSG179 can be downloaded free of charge from the HSE website.
