Traffic accidents resulting in death or serious injury (FOI)

Traffic accidents resulting in death or serious injury (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 11 September 2018.

Request

How many traffic accidents with death or serious injury (requiring an ambulance to hospital from the scene) have been caused in Jersey due to vehicle drivers being over the current drink / drive Jersey limit in 2017.

Response

In 2017, there were 57 road traffic collisions where the injury was considered serious enough for one or more parties to attend hospital. Most involved pedal cycles or motor cycles and no other vehicles. Of these, only one involved the driver being over the prescribed limit. The driver was the only injured party.

There were three fatal accidents in 2017. Two were medical matters where the driver had a serious medical issue and one involved an elderly pedestrian. None of the cases had alcohol as a contributory factor.
