Request

Please confirm how many new cars were sold in Jersey in 2023 and how many used cars were sold?

Response

Vehicles in Jersey are registered as either ‘never registered’ (newly registered) or ‘previously registered’ (imported used).

Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) does not record if vehicles have been ‘sold’ for a monetary value, therefore, Article 3 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 applies.

However, the numbers below are the total 'new' and 'used' vehicles added to the register in 2023:

  • 1,560 newly registered cars added to the register.
  • 1,399 previously registered (used) cars added to the register.

Article applied

Article 3 Meaning of “information held by a public authority”

For the purposes of this Law, information is held by a public authority if –

(a)     it is held by the authority, otherwise than on behalf of another person; or

(b)     it is held by another person on behalf of the authority.
