Compensation paid to alledged rape victims (FOI)

Compensation paid to alledged rape victims (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 18 April 2024.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please advise amount of compensation paid to women claiming to be rape victims to encourage them to lay charges and bring their perpetrators to court.

Response

Compensation payments may be made to victims of criminal injury in Jersey, including sexual assault, through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. Levels of compensation are in line with civil awards for harm and are not specified in the scheme. Please see the link below for details:

Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.gov.je.

No compensation is payable without having first established that a crime occurred. The level of payment to ‘claimants’ in advance of a court case is therefore zero.

No payment is made to initiate criminal complaints.

Victims of crime do not ‘lay charges’ in Jersey, as prosecutions are brought by the Attorney General.
