Planning your birth

A birth preference is a record of what you would like to happen during your labour and after the birth. You don't have to create a birth preference sheet but, if you would like one, your midwife will be able to help. You can use the preferences for birth section in your pregnancy record / notes.

A birth plan is personal to you and you can change it at any time. Your birth plan can include your preferences about:

  • inducing labour
  • a hospital or home birth
  • if you require a translator
  • types of birth
  • pain relief
  • who you would like with you during labour
  • birthing equipment available, such as a birthing pool or fitness birthing ball
  • feeding your baby after birth
  • delivering the placenta after birth
  • Vitamin K injection for your baby

It’s a good idea to keep a copy of your birth plan with you. The maternity team who care for you during labour will discuss it with you so they know what you want.

How to make a birth plan on the NHS website

Choosing where to give birth

You can choose to have a home birth or give birth in the General Hospital. Your options will depend on your needs and risks.

If you're healthy and have no complications (low risk) you could consider a home birth. For women with some medical conditions, it's safest to give birth in hospital, where specialists are available if you need treatment during labour.

Giving birth at the General Hospital

If you choose to give birth in hospital, you'll be looked after by midwives. There are doctors in maternity who will be available if you need their help.

Advantages of giving birth in hospital include:

  • direct access to obstetricians if your labour becomes complicated
  • direct access to anaesthetists, who give epidurals and general anaesthetics
  • there will be specialists in newborn care (neonatologists) and a special care baby unit if there are any problems with your baby

Private rooms

Our private, ensuite room with TV is priced at £171 per night and is subject to availability. We are unable to pre-book or guarantee use of the private room . It is decided on by the midwife in charge on a day by day basis.

Payment for private rooms

When you are discharged from the Maternity Unit your form will be sent to the Finance Department who will then send you an invoice for payment.
