What is severe weather

Severe weather can take many different forms, for example:

  • heavy rain
  • snow and ice
  • strong winds
  • extreme temperatures, including both heatwaves and cold snaps

These events can cause significant disruption to normal life. As we feel the effects of climate change, it's likely that we'll experience extremes of weather more often.

What you need to do in severe weather

During severe weather:

  • listen to weather forecasts and follow advice around any warnings of extreme weather
  • follow us on X and follow us on Facebook for the latest information and advice for emergency planning
  • do not travel unless you really need to. If you have to travel in severe weather, make sure you have adequate clothing and emergency supplies with you
  • if you have children, visit their school's website to check opening hours
  • check your employer's business continuity arrangements
  • check on the wellbeing of elderly neighbours or relatives

The Government of Jersey Severe Weather Plan provides a strategic overview of actions, roles and responsibilities in a multi-agency response to prepare and mitigate for periods of severe weather.
