Library launches reading challenge

04 July 2011

Jersey Library is introducing children to a summertime circus spectacle that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holidays.

Children aged between 4 and 11 years will be able to register for Circus Stars the 2011 Summer Reading Challenge, from Thursday 14 July. Registration will be acccepted at Jersey Library, Les Quennevais Branch Library and the Mobile Library.

Each child will receive a Circus Stars membership card and a Circus Stars collecting folder and over the summer holidays they will read 6 library books of their choice.

Stickers

The children then tell library staff about the books they have read, and for each completed book they get a sticker to go on their Circus Stars collecting folder. When the sixth book is completed and the sixth sticker collected, children will also receive a Circus Stars wristband.

Everyone who completes the challenge by Saturday 17 September will receive a medal and certificate during a school assembly in the autumn term; they will also be entered into a prize draw.

Linne Omissi, Senior Librarian, Young Readers Department says: "The Summer Reading Challenge is a way to help children love reading, gain confidence and develop new skills.

"It gets more popular every year; last year 2,078 children in Jersey took part, 148 more than in 2009.  Children have fun, and consolidate their literacy skills into the bargain."
