Forum seeks views on minimum wage

27 May 2015

The Employment Forum is reviewing what hourly rate the minimum wage should be set at from April next year and wants to hear from stakeholders.

The chair of the Employment Forum, Helen Ruelle, said  “As always, it is important that we hear from employers who pay the minimum wage as well as minimum wage earners. We are also asking businesses what circumstances might allow them to tolerate bigger or quicker minimum wage increases in the future.

"The Forum is an independent body that plays an important role trying to find a balance that is right for Jersey. We base this on consultation with stakeholders, the latest statistics, as well as advice about the local economy.”

Minimum wage rates

20142015
Minimum wage (per hour)£6.63£6.78
Trainee rate year 1 (per hour)£4.97£5.09
Trainee rate year 2 (per hour)£5.80£5.93

Over the next two months, the Forum will receive comments from a range of stakeholders including representatives of employers and employees, and will then consider all of the responses, along with the latest statistics and economic advice, before making a recommendation to the Minister for Social Security. The Minister will then consider the Forum’s recommendations and propose any necessary changes to the minimum wage law.

More information, and instructions on how to comment, are available on the consultations section.
