More bus shelters on the way

12 April 2017

Islanders are being asked for their views on the installation of a further seven new bus shelters across the Island.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) completed a total of thirteen shelters at bus stops across the island in 2016 and have identified the following seven locations for potential installation of new shelters at:

  • Trinity Road, southbound at Trinity Gardens, St Helier
  • Janvrin Road, northbound at Springfield Stadium, St Helier
  • Grande Route de la Cote, westbound at Avalon Park, St Clement
  • Les Nouvelles Charrieres de Bonne Nuit, bus terminus layby, St John
  • Route de St Aubin, eastbound at Bel Royal Gardens, St Lawrence
  • Longueville Road, westbound at Rue des Pres Trading Estate, St Saviour

Full information and drawings are available on this website for anyone wishing to comment during the consultation period which closes on Friday 28 April.

Consultation on additional bus shelters

Shelters are appreciated by passengers and are part of the programme to increase demand for public transport services and encourage LibertyBus to continue improving bus frequencies and hours of operation.

In 2015 and 2016, the Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, instigated the installation of some 25 bus shelters increasing the number by 60%  from 41 to 66.

As service levels improve, bus travel is becoming increasingly popular. The total number of passenger journeys recorded in 2016 exceeded 4.35 million – a rise of over 20% compared to 2013. Demand in the first three months of this year was 7.6% higher than the same period in 2016.

New services starting for the summer 2017 season are expected to grow these numbers further.

Deputy Noel said “I am delighted that the bus service continues to go from strength to strength.  Enhancing the waiting environment at bus stops is an important part of the package, complementing increases in bus frequency and the introduction of additional services creating new links. I would be pleased to hear what members of the public think of these seven additional sites for shelters, and I am committed to identifying further locations later in 2017.”

New bus routes starting from 29 May 2017 are:

  •  Service 20 (St Helier – Grands Vaux – Five Oaks – Hougue Bie – Maufant)
  •  Service 27 (St Helier – St Lawrence – Tamba Park – St Mary – La Mare Wine Estate)
  •  Sunday frequency on services 1 and 15 increased from two buses per hour to three buses per hour.
