Government begins publishing statistics on COVID-19 related deaths

27 April 2020

From today (Monday 27 April), the Government will be proactively publishing daily statistics on the number of Covid-19 related deaths registered with the Office of the Superintendent Registrar.

These statistics will cover the following:

  • The total number of Covid-19 deaths registered to date
  • The number of Covid-19 laboratory-proven deaths
  • The number of Covid-19 presumptive deaths (where there is no laboratory result or a negative result, but cause of death is certified as ‘probable’ based on clinical history, examination, and investigation)
  • The number of Covid-19 deaths that occurred in hospital (General Hospital, St Saviour’s Hospital, and Overdale Hospital)
  • The number of Covid-19 deaths which occurred in care homes
  • The number of Covid-19 deaths which occurred in domestic properties
  • The demographic split by age
  • The demographic split by sex

From Thursday 30 April, the Government will publish weekly statistics, reporting on the week ending the previous Sunday.

These statistics will cover the following:

  • Total deaths registered in the last seven days
  • Percentage of total deaths registered in the last seven days which are Covid-19 deaths
  • Total deaths registered in the last seven days for the same period in 2019 and 2018
  • Total deaths registered in the last 28 days
  • Percentage of total deaths registered in the last 28 days which are Covid-19 deaths
  • Total deaths registered in the last 28 days for the same period in 2019 and 2018
  • Total number of deaths registered in the year-to-date
  • Total number of deaths registered in the year-to-date in 2019 and 2018

All deaths which occur in Jersey are listed in a Register of Deaths. This function has been transferred from individual Parish Registrars to the Superintendent Registrar as part of the Covid-19 response.

A death registration is based on information submitted to the Superintendent Registrar by a certifying doctor and by an application to register a death by the next of kin via a funeral director. Before this registration can take place, all information submitted must be scrutinised and verified. This means that there can be a period of time between the date of death and the registration of that death.

Some deaths will need to be investigated by the Viscount/Deputy Viscount – which will mean the registration will take place later.

A death which is not subject to investigation by the Viscount/Deputy Viscount will normally be registered two to five days after the date of death.
