Havre des Pas Improvement Scheme

​About the project

We will undertake works to improve walking and cycling at Havre des Pas.

The first phase of works is due to start in early 2025.

Improvements include:

• 5 new pedestrian crossings on Havre des Pas and La Grève D’Azette
• more attractive road and junction surfaces
• some widening of pavements
• pedestrian priority pavements across side roads
  
• new high-quality granite paving to footways
• features to mark gateways into the neighbourhood

Mount Bingham to Fort D’Auvergne

On the approach to Havre des Pas from Mount Bingham, we’ll create a ‘gateway’ feature with:

• a surface treatments
• tree planting
• a build out to define the parking layby

We may create a new bus stop at this location.

The Green Street junction and pedestrian crossings will be defined by surface colour and pattern. Granite paving will outline the area where the promenade meets the Green Street slipway. This will create more space to accommodate people walking, cycling and enjoying the area.

Continuous pavements will be applied to side roads, such as Havre des Pas Gardens. The pavement running across side roads, accentuating pedestrian priority and encouraging driver care.

At the Alix Shipyard Gardens a raised table will provide a direct pedestrian link across the road into this community facility. This will help slow the traffic along this narrow part of the road.

Fort D’Auvergne to Roseville Street

Where the road runs next to the sea, we’ll create an imprinted paved texture across the carriageway with high quality granite kerbs and paving on the pavements.

A new raised table west of Marrett Road will provide better pedestrian connectivity and slow the  traffic.

We’ll remove the existing bus stop layby at Fort D’Auvergne to create more public realm space. Buses will stop on the road. For the promenade area, we’ll add planting and seating and remove clutter.

A new raised zebra crossing to the east of this area will offer another pedestrian link to the promenade.

The carriageway and pavement improvements will continue as far as the Havre des Pas seafront gardens, including the light-controlled crossing at the Lido, Roseville Street junction and slipway.

Roseville Street to St Clement’s Road

We will look at opportunities to improve access into and through the Havre des Pas gardens. The aim will be to provide an alternative to the narrow pavement whilst respecting the heritage value of the enclosing walls.

The northern pavement treatment will be carried across the end of Cleveland Road to show the pedestrian priority to drivers .

Pedestrians will be able to use a new raised table across Havre des Pas immediately west of the St Clements Road roundabout. This will allow crossing near the roundabout but away from the complex traffic movements.

St Clement’s Road

To the north of the roundabout, we’ll show the pedestrian crossing and define a gateway on St Clement’s Road with a surface treatments. 

We’ll narrow the end of Dicq Road with the pavement built out and a pedestrian link. A street tree will be planted to the north to show the gateway into the area.

The mini-roundabout itself, and the pedestrian crossing to the south, will have a more sympathetic surface treatment in response to the Havre des Pas setting.

La Grève d’Azette 

We’ll improve the eastern approach to Havre des Pas, on La Grève d’Azette, as a gateway and to provide a better public realm. The road surface will have a paved texture with high quality kerbs and granite slab pavements. 

To create a more comfortable space around the bus shelter, we’ll remove the westbound bus stop layby and widen the pavement on the south side.

People walking from Beach Road and Hotel de Normandie across the road to the bus stop will be able to use a new pedestrian crossing, with a central refuge island.

Public exhibition of the designs

We will hold an exhibition explaining the planned works on Thursday 16 May 2024, 4.30pm to 6.30pm at:​
