Inspections and what to expect: health and safety at work

Notice of an inspection

Inspection of any workplace may be carried out at any reasonable time.

A health and safety inspector is not obliged to give prior notice to the employer.

Areas of the workplace covered

The inspector may choose to carry out a general inspection of the workplace as a whole or may concentrate on a specific area.

Why an inspection may be conducted

The reasons for inspecting a workplace include:

  • targeting of a specific industry (usually high risk)
  • as a follow up to an accident investigation
  • in response to a complaint
  • in response to a poor history of health and safety management
