Eat Safe food safety star ratings explained

Eat Safe scheme

When you visit a food business, you will see an Eat Safe star rating of 0, 2, 3, 4 or 5 displayed. This rating reflects the premises' food safety and hygiene standards and not the quality of the food.

If you don’t see a star rating, you can ask a staff member for their rating or look it up online. Ratings are given from 0 to 5 stars, with 5 being the best.

All businesses are required to publicly display their star rating by law. If you cannot find an Eat Safe rating at the buseinss you can tell Environmental Health and we will investigate.

Businesses are inspected anywhere between every six months to three years, depending on their level of risk and compliance.

Star ratings

Every registered food business in Jersey gets a food safety audit and star rating, based on compliance with the Jersey Food Law and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Food Safety Code of Practice.

After a food safety audit, a business may receive one of the following star ratings:

Stars Level of compliance
5 starsExcellent performer, fully compliant with the law and adopts best practice. Overall very high standard of food safety management practices
4 stars Very good performer, fully compliant with the law and some best practice. Overall good standard of food safety management practices
3 stars Good performer, fully compliant with the Jersey Food Law and overall acceptable standard of food safety management practices
2 starsPoor performer, low level of compliance with the Jersey Food Law with more effort required
No starsNon-compliant performer, a general failure to comply with the Jersey Food Law with major effort required to rectify issues

There is no 1 star rating because this would suggest some level of compliance with food safety standards. A rating of 0 stars shows failure to comply with the law.
