Airport anniversary helps 9 charities

20 February 2012

9 local charities will benefit from fund-raising activities at Jersey Airport in 2012 as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations.

Each year, Jersey Airport nominates 1 local charity, which receives monies as a result of staff’s fund-raising activities as well as through the central collection boxes in the airside departures lounge. In recent years, recipients have included ‘Help a Jersey Child’ and in 2011, over £2,000 was collected for ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’.

This year’s chosen charities were selected by airport and harbours staff from a shortlist provided by the Association of Jersey Charities. Each charity selected represents a different decade, determined by the year it was first established in the Island, from the 1930s through until the present day, complementing the 9 decades in which Jersey Airport has been open.

4 designated collection boxes have been created, which will highlight all of the 9 charities and will be sited throughout the airport; 2 in the departures terminal and 2 in the arrivals terminal. Any monies collected from the boxes by February 2013 will be equally divided between each of the 9 charities.

Group Chief Executive Officer from Ports of Jersey, Doug Bannister, says, "As part of Jersey Airport’s commitment to the community, we strive to raise funds for worthwhile causes throughout the year, whether by the fund-raising efforts of our own team or monies collected from the charity collection box in the airside departures lounge. As this is a significant year for us we decided to extend this initiative to allow a greater number of local worthwhile causes to benefit."

Lyn Wilton from the Association of Jersey Charities, who has been assisting Jersey Airport with the initiative, says, "It is always refreshing to see new ways in which organisations can connect with charities while at the same time engaging with the public’s imagination. This is a novel and innovative way for Jersey Airport to celebrate its 75th anniversary by supporting one charity for each of the decades. We appreciate that digging deep into your pockets in these difficult times needs more of an incentive and we wish Jersey Airport every success with this initiative."

Chosen charities

The chosen charities represent a wide selection of causes, including health and animal welfare as well as support for children and the elderly in the local community. The 9 chosen charities (together with the year in which they were established in the Island) are as follows:

  • Brig-Y-Don Children’s Home (1939)
  • Good Companions Club (1948)
  • Durrell (1959)
  • Meals on Wheels (1962)
  • CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children (1974)
  • Jersey Hospice Care (1982)
  • Motor Neurone Disease Association (1992)
  • Autism Jersey (2005)
  • Jersey Alzheimers Association (2010)

Jersey Airport will continue to facilitate additional charity fundraisers such as the annual Jersey Poppy Appeal and Joint Association Jersey Christmas Appeal as well as those supported by on-site business partners. Mr Bannister concludes, "We remain grateful to everyone who uses the airport, be they staff or members of the public for their generous support, which we hope will continue throughout this anniversary year and help us raise even more funds than ever before for these 9 worthwhile causes."
