Tourism strategy consultation launched

09 July 2012

The purpose of the consultation is to allow members of the tourism industry to contribute to and support the department’s new strategy for the continued development of tourism in Jersey.

The consultation has been divided into 4 sections, which deal with seasonality, value, employment opportunities and investment. The paper will pose a number of questions, such as whether more resources should be devoted to marketing outside the main summer season, and the issue of employing more locally qualified staff throughout the industry.

The consultation will run until 30 September 2012 and members of staff from the Tourism Department will be available throughout this period to assist with the process.

Economic Development Minister, Senator Alan Maclean, has emphasised the importance of involving the tourism industry in the new strategy, which is likely to have an impact on investment decisions for both States of Jersey and the private sector.

He said “It is clear from all economic indicators that the Jersey economy is not immune from the effects of the global downturn, or the continued uncertainties within the eurozone, making the timing of this process critical as we seek to maintain our share of a growing tourism market globally.

“Much has changed since the previous strategy was launched in 2004 and we will use this strategy to build on that and provide a platform for future growth in what must be a partnership between government and the industry.”
