Firefighters release trapped horse

17 February 2012

Shortly after 11am on Thursday morning, fire crews were called to a field in Mont Huelin by passersby who had discovered a horse that had become stuck in a metal gate. The horse, named Autumn Shadow, had tried to jump the gate and her hind legs were wedged between 2 sections of the gate.

Crews from White Watch attended the incident in a fire engine and the rescue unit. The crews used hydraulic cutting equipment (usually used for road accidents) to cut the metal gate either side of the horse. This allowed the gate to drop to the floor, allowing the horse to walk out. Following her release, the horse was reunited with her owner, slightly stressed but otherwise unharmed.

Station Commander Marc Le Cornu said "Autumn Shadow's jumping abilities are not quite what they used to be and unfortunately she didn't fully make the gate! Our crews once again showed compassion and ingenuity in completing the successful release of a slightly stressed but otherwise unharmed Autumn Shadow."
