Freight operations temporarily suspended

07 January 2014

Freight operations in to and out of Jersey have been temporarily suspended to allow urgent repair work to be carried out on the eastern linkspan bridge at St Helier's Elizabeth Habour.

The work is expected to be completed in time for the Condor Clipper's expected arrival at 7.20pm today, 7 January 2014. The arrival of Valiant at 7pm will be unaffected because the vessel berths in a different location.

A compression fender on the linkspan, which is used to transfer passengers and vehicles to and from ferries, was damaged in high sea swells and adverse weather conditions, and is being repaired by Transport and Technical Services.

Linkspan bridge upgrade

Shipping operators have only been able to use the eastern linkspan bridge since last October, when major work began to upgrade the western linkspan bridge. The project is due for completion next month.

Linkspans are hinged at the landward end, while the seaward end floats, so that they are always at the correct level for safe loading and unloading regardless of the tide.
