Trial skate park for Millennium Park

05 June 2014

Skateboarders are to get a new facility at Millennium Park for a three-month trial.

It follows the results of a survey of park users and residents into what could be done to improve the park, and what more the police could do to engage the public. The survey was in response to sustained complaints of noise and low-level anti-social behaviour.

The three-month skate park trial will be introduced over the summer months, using removable equipment provided by the Youth Service.

Making best use of Millennium Park

Head of the Operational Support Unit, States of Jersey Police, Inspector Mark Coxshall, said “Millennium Park is a lovely place for people to go, but occasionally we've had complaints. The aim for us at the outset was to resolve these issues and to make the park an even nicer place for people to spend time.

“Following the public surveys we have met all groups to discuss the options and I am delighted to say that we are all in agreement that the ball cage should be trialled as a skate park. This is a good example of partners working together to find longer term solutions and tackle the cause as opposed to the consequences.

“The area will provide a safe place for young people to skate, away from the road, and we hope it will show them that the older generation are listening."

The States of Jersey Police, Transport and Technical Service, the Youth Service, Community Sports Development, the Parish of St Helier and the Friends of Millennium Town Park have been working together to make best use of the park.
