September start for sex discrimination protection

26 August 2015

Islanders are being reminded that laws which deliver family friendly rights and protection against sex discrimination come into force on 1 September 2015.

Social Security Minister Deputy Susie Pinel said: “This legal protection applies no matter whether you are in the workplace, at school or in a restaurant or a shop. We all need to be aware of our behaviour and employers need to make sure that their policies comply with the new law.”

From 1 September, people in Jersey will be protected against discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the following grounds:

  • sex
  • sexual orientation
  • gender reassignment
  • pregnancy and maternity

In addition, new family friendly rights will give employees the right to:

  • paid time off work for antenatal appointments
  • maternity leave (up to 18 weeks) with a right to return to work
  • parental (paternity) leave
  • adoption leave
  • request flexible working

The 2,500 Jersey employers who receive contributions schedules by post from the Social Security Department will receive a flyer in September reminding them of the changes.

Advice and training for employers is available from JACS and members of the public who would like to find out more about their rights can contact Jersey Citizen’s Advice. Guides are available on both organisations’ websites.
