Unemployment falls to eight year low of 1,000

06 July 2017

Unemployment figures released today (7 July 2017) by the States of Jersey Statistics Unit show the number of people who were registered as actively seeking work (ASW) in June fell to 1,000 - the lowest recorded since October 2009.

The overall number of those actively seeking work in June was 160 lower than the previous quarter, and 390 lower than the same quarter in 2016.

Deputy Graham Truscott, Social Security Assistant Minister, said, “The figures released today are great news for Jersey, and a real testament to how far we have come since the record highs of 2013 when we had over 2,000 islanders registered as actively seeking work.

“Whilst this downward trend is encouraging, we continue to remain fully committed in our efforts to help people gain sustainable employment and financial independence.”

Back to Work was launched in 2012 by the Social Security Department to tackle rising unemployment in Jersey. Since then they have had major success in reducing registered unemployment levels in Jersey, which could have risen significantly higher without their efforts.

Back to Work’s team of advisors work closely with all locally-qualified jobseekers, to help make them more employable by providing dedicated support, and training in the skills they need to get into paid and sustainable employment.  Between January and June this year, over 900 job starts have already been supported by Back to Work.

For employers, Back to Work Recruitment provides a free recruitment service to match jobseekers with an employer’s requirements.  The services available include: candidate search and selection, job trials, financial incentives for employers who recruit long-term unemployed, interviewing and feedback, plus training and work placements.

Employers who have any vacancies should call Back to Work Recruitment on +44 (0) 1534 447411 or email Back to Work.
