Jersey celebrates Care Leavers Week

26 October 2020

Several initiatives are being organised in Jersey in recognition of National Care Leavers’ Week.

National Care Leavers’ week is an annual campaign that runs between 26 October and 1 November, which aims to inspire those who have left care to achieve their full potential, as well as helping to challenge the stigma surrounding care.

To mark Care Leavers’ Week in Jersey, two events are being held:
  • A coffee morning at St Mark’s Church on Wednesday 28, October between 10am and 12pm. This is open to all care leavers and arts and crafts will be available for those bringing children
  • A cinema evening at Grand Jersey on Thursday, 29 October between 5pm and 8pm. A dinner will be included

Children’s Minister Senator Sam Mézec said: “People with experience of care must be at the heart of what we do to improve services for children in Jersey. I am pleased to see that a number of events have been organised for Care Leavers’ Week in Jersey and would like to thank all those involved.

“It’s important for us to recognise that leaving care can be challenging. The Council of Ministers has pledged to ‘put children first’ and that is why I was delighted that, back in January, we were able to announce two packages of support – one for children and young people who are in our care; the other a burgeoning entitlement for those leaving our care. As they become fully-fledged, both will provide much-needed support to those for whom we are fulfilling parental responsibilities.

“I hope that as many care leavers as possible takes part in Care Leavers’ Week to learn about the services and help available to them."
