A secondary school that has been described as a support for the town community during the COVID-19 pandemic has been given a grant by a St Helier charitable trust to buy devices for students and families to continue to access learning.

Haute Vallée School has received £6,000 from the St Helier Youth and Community Trust, which provides grants for initiatives that benefit St Helier residents.

The news follows the donation of 240 devices to Jersey schools last month by the department of Children Young People Education and Skills, as well as several devices donated by businesses and individuals through a social media scheme.

Haute Vallée School head teacher Stuart Hughes said: “When schools closed, we became acutely aware that not all families were fully equipped with reliable technology at home. We initially put temporary measures in place to counter this problem but, with this funding, we are delighted now to be able to continue a more sustainable solution for these students to give them an equal chance of success.
“The grant awarded to us by the St Helier Youth and Community Trust has meant that we have been able to purchase mobile technology to support home learning during the lockdown. Although students have now returned to school, many will benefit from having a laptop they can take home so they can continue to access online learning.”
Philip Le Claire, vice-chair of the St Helier Youth and Community Trust, said: “We were absolutely delighted to award the school the sum of £6,000 to purchase devices. Haute Vallée is a school that sits in the very heart of our community and supports so very many St Helier residents.
“Going forward, the trust is hoping to build on this initial grant and work in partnership with this incredible school to develop other opportunities for not only the school, but also the community and the trust.”
