Statement of significance
A good C19 example of a French Renaissance style building not generally found in Jersey. Retains much of its original external detailing, and some important elements of its historic interior.
Context
Prominent position and scale. It provides a visual conclusion for the long range of Parade buildings as they converge towards this pinch point, defining the start of the Town centre proper.
External Description
A tall, 2 storey structure with a mansard roof. It has 12 bays to the Seale Street side, 1 bay to the rounded corner and 6 bays to the York Street elevation. The ground floor is of rusticated granite stone ashlar walling with strong recessed horizontal joints pierced by segmental headed door and window openings. The openings are surrounded by bold mouldings cut in the granite, and at first floor level a simple granite entablature and cornice complete the plinth of the building. The first floor, which is more decoratively treated, is finished in cement render which includes a profusion of Renaissance ornamentation. Double panels and medallions have been formed between the windows which have swagged heads with small cornices above. At parapet level, the facade is crowned by an elaborate bracketed cornice, above which is a mansard roof.
Internal Description
The Assembly Room has many original features. Stair hall. The Old Magistrates Court retains a lot of original fixtures and fittings, with the ornate magistrateås bench in situ. Lot of modern office space and public areas. Prison cells on west side.
