Aim of the study
Studies indicate that school run traffic exposes children to elevated pollutant concentrations at school entrances.
To address air pollution around schools, we, with the help of air quality experts Ricardo, conducted an air quality monitoring study to assess pollutant exposure along popular main roads and backstreet walking routes to and from schools in Jersey.
Helvetia House school and St John’s Road
An air quality survey was carried out by UK consultants Ricardo for the Government’s Traffic Team at Infrastructure and Environment relating to the St Johns Road one way scheme. This was to determine if there were any positive or negative changes in air quality as a result of the scheme.
Overall, this study didn't indicate significant changes in air quality that would be at a level of concern for health and would therefore require specific mitigating action, as a result of the one-way closure trial scheme at St Johns Road.

Rouge Bouillon and Wellington Hill
We commissioned Ricardo to complete a short-term study to measure concentrations of pollutants at Rouge Bouillon School and on Wellington Road.
The survey involved fixed air quality monitoring each location and walking route surveys using a mobile air quality monitor during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.
Overall, analysis of results at both monitoring locations, indicate a pollution hot spot in very close proximity to each monitoring location for all pollutants. This is likely caused by:
- a high volume of vehicles passing along this road
- idling whilst waiting along this road during drop-off and pick-up times

St Luke's school
We commissioned Ricardo to support the School Street pilot at St Luke’s Primary School in St Saviour. They reviewed and reported on air quality data from sensors and diffusion tubes.
Overall, the results indicate that pollutant concentrations decreased during the pilot. Some analyses indicated a small increase in concentrations when investigating only at drop-off and pick-up times.
