International agreements to cut emissions

Jersey is a signatory, through the UK, to the Paris Agreement and the International Convention on Climate Change. Jersey agreed to an ambitious emissions reduction trajectory.  This means reducing emissions by 68% by 2030, 78% by 2035 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050. This is measured against a 1990 baseline.

We have historical greenhouse gas emissions dating back to 1990. This includes where emissions come from, for example domestic, road and energy industry.

In 2021, Jersey emitted 358,425 tCO2eq. This is roughly 3.5 tCO2eq per person. Between 1990 and 2021, emissions in Jersey have decreased by 46%.  This reduction is largely due to a decrease in emissions from energy supply.

Transport sector emissions accounts for 40.9% of total emissions in the 2021 inventory. Between 1990 and 2021, emissions in the transport sector have decreased by 27.5%. 48% of carbon dioxide emissions came from the transport sector, with passenger cars being the biggest source.  Government funding for electric vehicles is available through the electric vehicle pu​rchase incentive.                                                                                         

Emissions from the agriculture sector have reduced by 32.6% from 1990 to 2021. The largest agriculture emissions source in 2021 was from raising animals for meat and milk.  65% of methane emissions in Jersey 2021 came from the agricultural sector.                       

Emissions from the residential sector accounted for 25.5% of total emissions in the 2021 inventory and have decreased by 41.7% since 1990. The majority of emissions are from the burning of fuels in homes, mainly for heating and c​ooking.  Switching from fossil fuel powered heating systems to low carbon alternatives has a significant impact on emissions.  Government funding is available for this through the low carbon heating incentive​

The most recent emissions data is from 2021. Due to the complexity of this data and the need for rigorous analysis, it is typical across jurisdictions for emissions data to be two years behind.

Lowering greenhouse gas emissions

Jersey has made a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Actions to help us to do this are outlined in the Carbon Neutral Roadmap

Although not part of our international reporting, we also consider Jersey's indirect greenhouse gas emissions.
