Jersey cycle helmet law

When cycle helmets must be worn in Jersey

From 6 October 2014, cycles helmets are compulsory for children aged 13 years and under in Jersey. Children must wear a protective helmet if they are:

  • aged 13 years and under
  • on a pedal cycle or trailer drawn by a pedal cycle, on a road or cycle track

Cycle helmet requirements

The helmet must:

  • be securely fastened to the child’s head
  • comply with a standard set out in the law
    • British standard BS EN 15918
    • European standard EN 15918
  • be the correct size, adjusted and positioned to fit the child, as set out in the law
  • have been manufactured no more than 10 years ago

When a cycle helmet does not have to be worn

There are various circumstances and exceptions when a cycle helmet does not have to be worn. The main ones are:

  • a child cycling on a sea beach
  • a child who, on a cycle track, is on a pedal cycle having four or more wheels
  • a Sikh child wearing a turban
  • a child of the correct height and weight restrained by a safety belt in the type of trailer described by the law

You can find more information about the requirements of the law, and what happens if your child doesn't comply, in the Road Traffic (No. 60) (Jersey) Regulations 2014 and the Pedal Cycles (Amendment No 2) (Jersey) Order 2014.

If your child doesn't comply with the law, you can be fined.
