Recycling: light bulbs

How you can recycle light bulbs

Don't put lightbulbs in your household rubbish or glass bin as they contain glass, metals and potentially hazardous chemicals.

Light bulbs and tubes should be taken to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre. There are different containers for different types and sizes of bulbs/tubes.

Before recycling remove materials like cardboard, electrical tape and packaging material to dispose of these separately.

Make sure the bulbs are packed to avoid damage during transport. If they are damaged, put them in a plastic bag and ask a member of our staff at the Household Reuse and Recycle Centre for assistance.

Separate different types of bulbs from one another so they can be disposed of differently. Fluorescent tubes contain small amounts of mercury and must be recycled separately.

Good to know

Traditional lightbulbs are being replaced by long-life bulbs due to their energy efficiency.

Handle all lightbulbs with care.
