About the consultation

There are increasing pressures being placed on our natural marine resources and a growing recognition that coastlines should be managed in a planned and sustainable way. There are many competing interests for the use of Jersey's marine resources including:

  • renewable energy
  • shipping
  • recreational boating
  • commercial and recreational fishing
  • kayaking and surfing

In order for all interests to be balanced in a fair way, the Economic Development and Environment departments have produced the Marine Resources Strategy.

Strategy to safeguard marine resources

It sets out 45 recommendations for the long-term safeguarding Jersey's marine resources, while supporting the Island's commercial and leisure users. The proposals aim to promote more productive, sustainable and better managed marine-based industries so they can continue to grow and provide employment. The strategy aims to:

  • ensure long-term protection of the marine resource within Jersey’s territorial sea
  • support the sustainable development of Jersey’s fishing and aquaculture industries
  • promote fair access to (and use of) the marine resource by a diverse range of interests
