Health and Safety Inspectorate: who we are and what we do

​The Health and Safety Inspectorate carries out a wide range of activities aimed at ensuring that persons at work and other people who could be affected by working activities are not exposed to risks to their health or safety.

Our responsibilities include:

  • making sure that health and safety law and legislation is properly enforced
  • carrying out investigations at / arising from work activities 
  • responding to complaints about or arising from unsatisfactory working conditions
  • providing advice in response to queries
  • targeting high risk work activities through inspections and other means, with the aim of improving standards of safety
  • highlighting particular areas of concern by providing published guidance, issuing advice and using other means to educate employers and employees on occupational health and safety issues
  • carrying out general inspections of workplaces
