Registration with Gas Safe Register required for all work with gas

04 January 2022

The Health and Safety Inspectorate is reminding gas engineers and those in control of work with gas that the updated Safe Work with Gas Systems and Appliances Approved Code of Practice (Gas ACoP) came into force on the 01 January 2022.

The Gas ACoP has been extended to include a requirement that engineers working in Jersey are assessed as competent by completion of an Accredited Certification Scheme and are registered with the approved body, currently the Gas Safe Register.

The Gas ACoP gives practical guidance to those with duties under the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law, 1989 when working with gas fittings and appliances and those with duties to ensure that they are maintained in a safe condition.

These standards should already be well known to competent and experienced engineers.

Any work with gas is potentially dangerous and the risks must be properly controlled.  By its very nature gas is highly combustible.  In addition to the risk from gas leaking, faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances can lead to incomplete combustion of gas creating carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless, and poisonous gas which can, and does kill affected people each year.
