Government of Jersey's child friendly privacy policy

About

This is the child-friendly summary of, not a substitute of, our overall Government of Jersey privacy policy.

This Privacy Policy tells you what we do with your personal information.

It is our job to tell you what information we collect about you, how we will collect this information, how we will use it, who we will share it with and how long we will keep it for.

Personal data

Personal data is information that can be used by someone that identifies you and could be as simple as your name, your photograph and your profile on apps such as Instagram or Facebook and online games.

Information we collect about you

The type of information we collect about you includes:

  • your name
  • your address
  • contact details
  • date of birth
  • other information related to your health and education

Why we collect and use your information

We only collect your personal information when we need it to:
  • get in touch with you and your parents when we need to
  • provide appropriate care and support to you
  • monitor and report your progress at school

How we use the information about you and who we share your data with

Sometimes there is a law that requires us to pass on some of your information, for example to help stop a crime like someone being hurt. We aren’t allowed to say “no”, even if you haven’t given us permission. We may share information with:
  • school
  • police
  • The Royal or Magistrate Court
  • your doctor or the hospital
  • youth Service
  • advocates
  • Children Services
  • your family

Another way we use your information is when you or your parents/guardians have given us permission to do so. This is called “Consent”. For example your school will ask permission for your photo to be published in the local newspaper.

We will not share your information with anyone for the purposes of selling you anything.
If we receive personal data about you from someone else this will be kept safe whilst we have it. We might receive information about you from:

  • your doctor
  • children’s groups
  • charities
  • family members

How long will we keep your information

We only keep your personal data for as long as we need it to do our job.

Your rights

Under the law, you can:
  • ask us for a copy of the information we have about you. This is called The Right of Access
  • ask for incorrect information to be corrected. This is called The Right of Rectification
  • ask us to delete all the information we have about you (if we can we will then do that, and just keep your name on a list of people we won’t get in touch with again). This is called the Right of Erasure
  • ask us to limit the way we use your information in certain circumstances. This is called The Right of Restriction of processing
  • tell us we can’t use information about you for anyone to sell you anything. This is called The Right of Object to processing
  • ask us to transfer the information you gave us from one organisation to another, or give it to you. This is called The Right of Data portability

If you have any questions or you are not happy with the way we have used your personal data you can contact the Central Data Protection Unit.

You can also complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner about the way your information is being used.
