Construction: the use of ladders in the workplace

Ladders are one of the most used and misused pieces of access equipment.

Although many people use ladders without incident, when things do go wrong, the injuries are often very serious, for example broken legs, shattered heels etc.

Ladders are primarily intended as a means of access, rather than as a working platform.

You should only use ladders for short duration work which can be carried out using one hand, to enable you to hold onto the ladder with the other.

The ladder should be secured or footed. Footing is only appropriate for ladders up to 20 feet in length.
