Police launch multiple murder investigation

14 August 2011

States of Jersey Police have launched a murder investigation following a critical incident involving a knife attack at St Helier earlier today (Sunday, August 14th 2011).

Police were called to a flat at Victoria Crescent, Upper Midvale Road, St Helier just after 3pm today after reports of a multiple stabbing incident. At least five people have been confirmed dead, and another is in a critical condition at Jersey Hospital, undergoing surgery.

A 30 year old man is currently in Police custody at Jersey Hospital where he is also recovering from surgery.

While efforts are being made to confirm the identities of the victims, a number of witnesses have come forward and are currently being interviewed by Police. Forensic officers are at the scene, together with a number of uniformed officers and detectives.

Head of Crime Services Stewart Gull, who is leading the inquiry, said “Clearly this complex investigation is in its very early stages as we try to establish exactly what happened. We are appealing to anyone who may have any information to contact us.

“We are mindful, too, of the impact of any such serious and tragic incident on the local community, and we have Police Officers in the area to support the investigation and local people.”

A major incident room has been set up at Police Headquarters in St Helier, and Police are appealing for anyone who may have any information to contact them on 01534 612612.
